Eczema

Eczema is a chronic skin disorder that involves scaly and itchy rashes. Atopic eczema is the most common type. Atopic eczema is due to a hypersensitivity reaction (similar to an allergy) in the skin, which leads to long-term inflammation of the skin. Eczema is most common in infants. Many people outgrow it by early adulthood. The condition tends to run in families.People with eczema often have asthma or hay fever, too. There is often a family history of allergic conditions such as asthma, hay fever, or eczema.The following can make eczema symptoms worse:Allergies to pollen, mold, dust mites, or animalsColds or the fluContact with rough materialsDry skinExposure to environmental irritantsExposure to waterFeeling too hot or too coldFragrances or dyes added to skin lotions or soapsStressSymptoms:Typical skin changes may include:Blisters with oozing and crustingEar discharge or bleedingRaw areas of the skin from scratchingSkin coloring changes -- more or less coloring than the normal skin tone Skin redness or inflammation around the blistersThickened or leather-like areas, called lichenification, which can occur after long-term irritation and scratchingBoth the type of rash and where the rash appears can depend on the age of the patient:In children younger than age 2, skin lesions begin on the face, scalp, hands, and feet. It is often a crusting, bubbling, or oozing rash.In older children and adults, the rash is more commonly seen on the inside of the knees and elbows, as well as the neck, hands, and feet.During a severe outbreak, rashes may occur anywhere on the body.Itching, which is sometimes intense, almost always occurs. Itching may start even before the rash appears.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes skin redness and irritation. Most people with psoriasis have thick, red skin with flaky, silver-white patches called scales.Psoriasis is a very common condition. The disorder may affect people of any age, but it most commonly begins between ages 15 and 35.The condition cannot be spread to others.Psoriasis seems to be passed down through families. Doctors think it probably occurs when the body's immune system mistakes healthy cells for dangerous substances. See also: Inflammatory responseSkin cells grow deep in the skin and normally rise to the surface about once a month. In persons with psoriasis, this process is too fast (about 2 weeks instead of 4 weeks) and dead skin cells build up on the skin's surface.The following may trigger an attack of psoriasis or make the condition more difficult to treat:Bacteria or viral infections, including strep throat and upper respiratory infectionsDry air or dry skinInjury to the skin, including cuts, burns, and insect bitesSome medicines, including antimalaria drugs, beta-blockers, and lithiumStressToo little sunlightToo much sunlight (sunburn)Too much alcoholIn general, psoriasis may be severe in people who have a weakened immune system. This may include persons who have:AIDSAutoimmune disorders (such as rheumatoid arthritis)Cancer chemotherapyUp to one-third of people with psoriasis may also have arthritis, a condition known as psoriatic arthritis.SymptomsPsoriasis can appear suddenly or slowly. In many cases, psoriasis goes away and then flares up again repeatedly over time.People with psoriasis have irritated patches of skin. The redness is most often seen on the elbows, knees, and trunk, but it can appear anywhere on the body. For example, there may be flaky patches on the scalp.The skin patches or dots may be:ItchyDry and covered with silver, flaky skin (scales)Pink-red in color (like the color of salmon)Raised and thickOther symptoms may include:Genital lesions in malesJoint pain or aching (psoriatic arthritis)Nail changes, including nail thickening, yellow-brown spots, dents (pits) on the nail surface, and separation of the nail from the baseSevere dandruff on the scalpPsoriasis may affect any or all parts of the skin. There are five main types of psoriasis:Erythrodermic -- The skin redness is very intense and covers a large area.Guttate -- Small, pink-red spots appear on the skin.Inverse -- Skin redness and irritation occurs in the armpits, groin, and in between overlapping skin.Plaque -- Thick, red patches of skin are covered by flaky, silver-white scales. This is the most common type of psoriasis.Pustular -- White blisters are surrounded by red, irritated skin.

Dermatitis

Dermatitis
Dermatitis symptoms vary with all different forms of the condition. They range from skin rashes to bumpy rashes or including blisters. Although every type of dermatitis has different symptoms, there are certain signs that are common for all of them, including redness of the skin, swelling, itching and skin lesions and sometimes oozing and scarring. Also, the area of the skin on which the symptoms appear tends to be different with every type of dermatitis.The symptoms of contact dermatitis usually appear at the site where the allergen got into contact with the skin. Also, the symptoms of neurodermatitis are limited to a single area, often the neck, wrist, forearm, thigh or ankle. More rarely, the primary symptom of this condition which is itchy skin may appear on the genital area, such as the vulva or scrotum. Symptoms of this type of dermatitis may be very intense and may come and go. Irritant contact dermatitis is usually more painful than itchy.Although the symptoms of atopic dermatitis vary from person to person, the most common symptoms are dry, itchy, red skin. Typical affected skin areas include the folds of the arms, the back of the knees, wrists, face and hands. Less commonly there may be cracks behind the ears, and various other rashes on any part of the body. Itching is the primary symptoms of this condition.Dermatitis herpetiformis symptoms include itching, stinging and a burning sensation. Papules and vesicles are commonly present. The small red bumps experienced in this type of dermatitis are usually about 1 cm in size, red in color and may be found symmetrically grouped or distributed on the upper or lower back, buttocks, elbows, knees, neck, shoulders, and scalp. Less frequently, the rash may appear inside the mouth or near the hairline.Causes:A number of health conditions, allergies, genetic factors and irritants can be responsible for causing dermatitis. There are several types of dermatitis which are distinguished based on the factor that triggers the skin reaction.Cleaning products, such as the following, may cause contact dermatitis:skin soapsdetergentslaundry soapbleachThis specific type of dermatitis can also be caused by the exposure to allergens such as:rubber,metal (nickel),jewellery,cosmetics,fragrances and perfume,weeds (such as poison ivy)Individuals develop this condition due to a brief exposure to the allergen or to a prolonged exposure to an irritant, such as those mentioned above. Generally, people who become sensitive to an allergen will be allergic to it for the rest of their lives.Dry skin, chronic irritation, eczema and psoriasis are possible causes of neurodermatitis.

Dry Skin

Abnormally dry skin can be caused by a dry climate, winter weather, deficiency of vitamin A, systemic illness, overexposure to sunlight, or medication. The skin loses moisture. It may crack and peel. Or it may become irritated, inflamed, and itch. Bathing frequently, especially with soaps, can contribute to dry skin.With dry skin, it can help to keep baths or showers short in warm water with as little soap as possible, drying the skin gently, pat without rub. Dry skin can also usually be addressed by the use of over-the-counter (OTC) topical preparations for dry skin. If these products do not relieve the condition, see a dermatologist for more specific remedies. Many older people suffer from dry skin, particularly on their lower legs, elbows, and forearms. The skin feels rough and scaly and often is accompanied by a distressing, intense itchiness. Low humidity caused by overheating during the winter and air conditioning during the summer contributes to dryness and itching. The loss of sweat and oil glands as you age also may worsen dry skin. Anything that further dries your skin such as overuse of soaps, antiperspirants, perfumes, or hot baths will make the problem worse. Dehydration, sun exposure, smoking, and stress also may cause dry skin.Dry skin itches because it is irritated easily. If your skin is very dry and itchy, see a doctor. Dry skin and itching can affect your sleep, cause irritability, or be a symptom of a disease. For example, diabetes and kidney disease can cause itching. Some medicines make the itchiness worse.The most common treatment for dry skin is the use of moisturizers to reduce water loss and soothe the skin. Moisturizers come in several forms ointments, creams, and lotions. Ointments are mixtures of water in oil, usually either lanolin or petrolatum. Creams are preparations of oil in water, which is the main ingredient. Creams must be applied more often than ointments to be most effective. Lotions contain powder crystals dissolved in water, again the main ingredient. Because of their high water content, they feel cool on the skin and dont leave the skin feeling greasy. Although they are easy to apply and may be more pleasing than ointments and creams, lotions dont have the same protective qualities. You may need to apply them frequently to relieve the signs and symptoms of dryness. Moisturizers should be used indefinitely to prevent recurrence of dry skin.A humidifier can add moisture to the air. Bathing less often and using milder soaps also can help relieve dry skin. Warm water is less irritating to dry skin than hot water.

Ichthyosis

Ichthyosis is characterised by persistently dry, thickened, rough, "fish scale" skin. There are at least 20 varieties of ichthyosis, including inherited and acquired forms.Ichthyosis vulgaris, accounts for 95% of all ichthyosis cases. Inheritance is autosomal dominant i.e. it is passed from a parent to about half their children. Signs and symptoms of ichthyosis vulgaris usually become apparent within the first year of life.The other main forms of inherited ichthyosis include lamellar ichthyosis, epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, and X-linked ichthyosis.Acquired ichthyosis is not inherited and occurs for the first time in adulthood. It is usually associated with some general systemic disease, such as underactive thyroid states, sarcoidosis, lymphoma, generalised cancer or HIV infection. It may be provoked by certain medications (such as kava, nicotinic acid and hydroxyurea).What causes ichthyosis?Inherited forms of ichthyosis occur as a result of a genetic mutation. The mutated gene is passed on from one generation to the next. However, within a family there may only be one person affected. This can happen if the gene is recessively inherited (you have inherited two recessive genes, one from each parent), or you are the "founder" of a spontaneously mutated gene.The mutated gene causes an abnormality in the normal lifecycle of skin. Whilst in most people, the growth, dying and shedding of skin happens unnoticed, people with ichthyosis reproduce new skin cells at a rate faster than they can shed it, or reproduce at a normal rate but the rate of shedding is too slow. Either way there is a build up of dry scaly skin.The mutated gene in ichthyosis vulgaris is found on chromosome Iq21 and is related to a protein called filaggrin.What are the signs and symptoms of ichthyosis?Although the signs and symptoms may vary amongst the different types of ichthyosis, they all show the characteristic dry, rough, scaly skin. Key characteristics of the four main types of inherited ichthyosis are listed below. Shingles

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful, blistering skin rash due to the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that causes chickenpox.After you get chickenpox, the virus remains inactive (becomes dormant) in certain nerves in the body. Shingles occurs after the virus becomes active again in these nerves years later.The reason the virus suddenly become active again is not clear. Often only one attack occurs.Shingles may develop in any age group, but you are more likely to develop the condition if:You are older than 60You had chickenpox before age 1Your immune system is weakened by medications or diseaseIf an adult or child has direct contact with the shingles rash on someone and has not had chickenpox as a child or a chickenpox vaccine, they can develop chickenpox, rather than shingles.SymptomsThe first symptom is usually one-sided pain, tingling, or burning. The pain and burning may be severe and is usually present before any rash appears.Red patches on the skin form in most people followed by small blisters.The blisters break, forming small ulcers that begin to dry and form crusts. The crusts fall off in 2 to 3 weeks. Scarring is rare.The rash usually involves a narrow area from the spine around to the front of the belly area or chest.The rash may involve face, eyes, mouth, and ears.Additional symptoms may include:Abdominal painChillsDifficulty moving some of the muscles in the faceDrooping eyelid (ptosis)Fever and chillsGeneral ill-feelingGenital lesionsHeadacheHearing lossJoint painLoss of eye motionSwollen glands (lymph nodes)Taste problemsVision problemsYou may also have pain, muscle weakness, and a rash involving different parts of your face if shingles affects a nerve in your face.

Seborrhea

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, inflammatory skin condition that causes flaky, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas such as the scalp or inside the ear. It can occur with or without reddened skin.Cradle cap is the term used when seborrheic dermatitis affects the scalp of infants.CausesSeborrheic dermatitis is thought to be due to a combination of an over production of skin oil and irritation from a yeast called malessizia.Seborrheic dermatitis appears to run in families. Stress, fatigue, weather extremes, oily skin, infrequent shampoos or skin cleaning, use of lotions that contain alcohol, skin disorders (such as acne), or obesity may increase the risk.Neurologic conditions, including Parkinson's disease, head injury, and stroke may be associated with seborrheic dermatitis. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has also been linked to increased cases of seborrheic dermatitis.SymptomsSeborrheic dermatitis can occur on many different body areas. Typically it forms where the skin is oily or greasy. Commonly affected areas include the scalp, eyebrows, eyelids, creases of the nose, lips, behind the ears, in the external ear, and along skin folds on the middle of the body.Seborrheic dermatitis in infants, also called cradle cap, is a harmless, temporary condition. It appears as thick, crusty, yellow or brown scales over the child's scalp. Similar scales may also be found on the eyelids, ear, around the nose, and in the groin. Cradle cap may be seen in newborns and small children up to age 3 .Cradle cap is not contagious, nor is it caused by poor hygiene. It is not an allergy, and it is not dangerous. Cradle cap may or may not itch. If it itches, excessive scratching of the area may cause additional inflammation, and breaks in skin may cause mild infections or bleeding.In general, symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis include:Skin lesionsPlaques over large areaGreasy, oily areas of skinSkin scales - white and flaking, or yellowish, oily, and adherent - "dandruff"Itching - may become more itchy if infectedMild rednessHair loss

Dandruff

Dandruff
Dandruff, also known as scurf or Pityriasis simplex capillitii, affects the scalp and causes flakes of skin to appear - it is a common condition. Our skin cells are forever renewing themselves. When the skin cells on our scalp are renewed the old ones are pushed to the surface and out of the scalp. For a person with dandruff the renewal is faster, meaning more dead skin is shed, making the dandruff more noticeable. Dandruff can also occur if the scalp is frequently exposed to extreme temperatures.Dandruff can be chronical (long-term) or the result of certain triggers. People with dandruff may also experience irritation and redness on the scalp.Excessive flaking may be caused by an underlying illness or condition, such as psoriasis, a fungal infection (Malassezia), seborrheic dermatitis, or even head lice.Some individuals with severe dandruff may have social or self-esteem problems. Therefore, treatment may be important for both physiological and psychological reasons. A myth - some people think their dandruff is caused by their scalp being too dry. They try to deal with this by not washing their hair with shampoo, or wash it less often, believing that washing worsens the problem. This is a myth (not true). Dandruff differs from a dry scalp in that it usually gets better when you shampoo more frequently (with the right shampoos).A significant number of people with dandruff find it improves as they get older.It is estimated that about 50% of people in Western Europe and North America suffer from dandruff.Dandruff is more common in men than in women, and in people with oily skin.Some studies have suggested that diets that are too salty, sugary or spicy and accompanied by excessive alcohol may exacerbate dandruff.

Hair Loss

Hair grows everywhere on the human skin except on the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet, but many hairs are so fine they're virtually invisible. Hair is made up of a protein called keratin (the same protein in nails) produced in hair follicles in the outer layer of skin; as follicles produce new hair cells, old cells are being pushed out through the surface of the skin at the rate of about six inches a year. The hair you can see is actually a string of dead keratin cells. The average adult head has about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs and loses up to 100 of them a day; so finding a few stray hairs on your hairbrush is not necessarily cause for alarm.At any one time, about 90% of the hair on a person's scalp is growing. Each follicle has its own life cycle that can be influenced by age, disease, and a wide variety of other factors. This life cycle is divided into three phases:Anagen -- active hair growth. Lasts between two to six years.Catagen -- transitional. Lasts two to three weeks.Telogen -- resting phase. At the end of the resting phase (two to three months) the hair is shed and a new hair replaces it and the growing cycle starts again.As people age, their rate of hair growth slows.There are many types of hair loss, also called alopecia:Gradual thinning of hair with age is a natural condition known as involutional alopecia. More and more hair follicles go into a telogen, or resting, phase, and the remaining hairs become shorter and fewer in number.Androgenic alopecia is another form of hair loss. It's a genetically predisposed condition that can affect both men and women. Men with this condition can begin suffering hair loss as early as their teens or early 20s, while most women don't experience noticeable thinning until their 40s or later.In men, the condition is also called male pattern baldness. It's characterized by a receding hairline and gradual disappearance of hair from the crown. In women, androgenic alopecia is referred to as female pattern baldness. Women with the condition experience a general thinning over the entire scalp, with the most extensive hair loss at the crown.Patchy hair loss in children and young adults, often sudden in onset, is known as alopecia areata. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease, meaning that the immune system revs up for unknown reasons and affects the hair follicles. In most cases the hair grows back, although it may be very fine and possibly a different color before normal coloration and thickness return.Although shampooing too often, perms, bleaching, and dyeing hair do not cause baldness, they can contribute to overall thinning by making hair weak and brittle. Tight braiding and using rollers or hot curlers can damage and break hair, and running hair picks through tight curls can scar hair follicles. In most instances hair grows back normally if the source of the problem is removed, but severe damage to the hair or scalp sometimes causes permanent bald patches.

1. How do the Dermikelp® products work?In order to explain how the range of Dermikelp® products work, the definition of itchy skin needs to be explained. So, what is itchy skin?Itchy skin is an inflammatory reaction of the skin and is a symptom of a wide variety of mild to serious diseases, disorders and conditions. Itching, also called pruritus, may or may not be associated with a rash and can affect a small area of the skin or the full body, and differ in severity, frequency and duration, depending on the underlying cause. Itching can result from infection, inflammation, allergy or sensitivity, insect bites, and other abnormal conditions. Depending on the cause, itchy skin can be short-term and disappear quickly, such as when itching occurs due to a build up of dead skin cells and can also occur in sudden episodes, such as itching that happens when a person is exposed to an allergen that causes a rash. Itching can also occur over a relatively long period of time, such as when itching is due to chronic eczema. Excessive scratching can introduce bacteria or fungus into the layers of the skin, resulting in infections. Dermikelp® products contain an active ingredient in the form of kelp, or seaweed, which contains natural anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the inflammation of the skin or scalp and relieve the itch. Moreover, the kelp used in Dermikelp® products has undergone the patented Cellburst Tecnologie™ process, making it far superior to any other kelp products on the market.2. What is CEM-K™ and how does it stop the itch?Ecklonia maxima is a species of brown kelp, or seaweed, and flourishes on rocky reefs off the coast of the western tip of Africa where the pristine, icy Benguela current sweeps up from Antarctica. This current keeps the kelp fronds in constant motion, bathing them in the tumultuous, nutrient-rich ocean, causing the kelp to grow extremely rapidly. Ecklonia maxima kelp has developed a strong and rubbery cell structure which enables it to thrive in the violent wave action present on this coastline. The strength of this marine plant is due to the presence of high levels of organic gels within its kelp tissue. In addition to organic gels, the kelp has significant amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids.The kelp used in Dermikelp® products is sustainably harvested from the pristine waters off the Cape coast and put through the patented Cellburst Technologie™ process which extracts the healing properties of the kelp without using harsh chemicals, heating or freezing.One of the key components of kelp is a sulfated polysaccharide known as Fucoidan. Fucoidan is believed to be on of natures most diverse and effective cell signallers with enormous power and energy in supporting significant and forceful effects on stem cells, organs, tissues and many biological structures. Why is CEM-K™ better than regular kelp?Lamicare SA (Pty) Ltd. is currently conducting research at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, to determine how much Fucoidan is present in the kelp used in Dermikelp® products. Initial results pertaining to the natural product composition of the seaweed, Ecklonia maxima, have shown that the Cellburst kelp samples contained a higher concentration of pigments, which, at this stage, are presumed to contain Polyphenols and Fucoxanthins, including Fucoidan. In fact, CEM-K™ yielded twice as much material as the regular kelp sample.Further analysis and accurate identification of these compounds are currently being conducted; however, it is clear that the Cellburst process results in a superior product with greatly enhanced skin healing properties.
